
Edinburgh University claimed maximum points in their first match of this year’s tournament, beating a young Watsonian side by a hefty 68 runs. The University’s top four batsmen all found form as Scotland U19 Player of the Year, Aman Bailwal, lead the charge with 31 not out.
The Myreside bowlers couldn’t find the rhythm, with extras contributing to their downfall . The Watsonian batsmen failed to fire as they slumped to 88-5 from 7.4 overs. Youngster Chris Cash was the only batsmen to offer any resistance against the university bowling attack with 32 not out.
The Watsonian team had time to re-group as Edinburgh University took on Tunnock’s Uddingston in game two.
This time Edinburgh University won the toss and elected to bat first. Aman Bailwal top scored again for the university side with 44 not out as the students completed their 10 over innings on 145-3.
In what was a pretty even contest, Calum MacLeod and David Bill hit 39 not out and 27 not out respectively for the men from Bothwell Policies. However, the match belonged to the Universitiy’s James Glover, who scored 27 not out and also bowled a wicket maiden to see his team home by 29 runs.
The Uddingston batsmen, Amir Gul hit 34 not out and Allan MacLeod 33 not out in Tunnock’s Uddingston innings against Watsonians in the final game of the evening as they managed to score 136-4 from 10 overs.
The Watsonian batsmen played with more discipline second time around. Contributions from Fraser Sands (30) and Chris Cash (27) were notable but it was youngster Andrew Chalmers who top scored, stranded on 49 not out as Calum MacLeod took two final over wickets leaving the the Myreside men 14 runs short of the Uddingston total.
Edinburgh University require just one win to progress to the final stages but the maximum point win over Watsonians gives Tunnock’s Uddingston an outside chance of qualification, should they win both their games when the sides meet again on Friday 17 February.
