Scotland U19s win by eight wickets against Denmark

Oli Hairs in action for Scotland Under 19Denmark won the toss and decided to bat first. Scotland made three changes to the side that lost to the Netherlands, Willie Rowan and Aman Bailwal made their first appearance at the tournament and Richie Lamb also came in, with Patrick Sadler, Safyaan Sharif and Michael Leask making way.

The Danes were soon in trouble when Minik Pedersen was bowled by Matthew Parker with the fifth delivery of the day, and in his second over he clean bowled Lars Boldt.

His opening bowling partner Willie Rowan soon got in on the act when he had Hamid Shah trapped in from and Denmark were 23 for 3.

It was a position from which they never really recovered as only Ali Ahmed put up any resistance as wickets fell all around him. He patiently batted throughout  the innings finishing on 46 not out from 146 balls with one four to his credit. Shah and Hald were the only other Danish batsmen to reach double figures as they were bundled out for 133 in the forty eighth over.

Ollie Hairs was the best bowler with 3 for 29 from 10 overs, and there were two wickets each for Matthew Parker, Willie Rowan and Keith Morton.

After the lunch interval Scotland set off like the proverbial train as they looked to improve their net run rate. They again opened with Hairs and Freddie Coleman and they hit ten runs off the first over from Sair Anjum, with Coleman cracking two boundaries.

Runs came at a pace, with 44 on the board after five overs, but in the fifth Coleman played across the line and was adjudged lbw by umpire Paul Baldwin.

Marc Petrie joined Hairs, but his stay was short-lived as he mistimed a pull to mid wicket and was caught by Sawmy, with the score on 58.

Ollie Hairs was a man on a mission and he bludgeoned the Danish attack to all parts of the ground as he and Ewan Chalmers saw Scotland home to an eight-wicket victory in the 19th over.

Hairs made 90* from only 63 balls, hitting 13 fours and one six and, with his three wickets earlier in the day, must have won many plaudits from the watching crowd.

Shah was the successful Danish bowler, taking two wickets but at a cost of 53 runs.

Scotland’s next fixture is against Guernsey on Saturday (18 July) at Victoria College, and they will await with interest the results from the other matches today.
